This image would have been very uninteresting without the use of a Tilt-Shift lens. When used like this, the affect is to emphasize the beautiful eyes.
The depth of field can be controlled with this lens in an amazing way, It’s great for portraits, when you need to throw the background out of focus, and also brilliant when shooting products, where a large depth of field is required.

This image was shot in two parts, The Shotgun with smoke on a nice moody background and the rugby balls separately.
I really enjoy shooting strong simple still life in the studio.

There was a series of these we shot as tests for McDonald’s, they never saw the light of day, but I really loved the idea, maybe now that we are in recession they will have more impact.
Then again who needs recruitment advertising these days.

Here is another image from The Storm Series.
The effect of the light getting through the clouds is very surreal.
It reminds me of a scene lit with tungsten light.

This shot is all about keeping things simple – one light, no colour, no Photoshop – just good old-fashioned emulsion and chemicals!
It’s a digital router etching out type in Styrofoam for Shane Cullen’s piece, The Agreement. The two little arms are air jets to keep the process clean. The artist used to do similar work by hand, but considering these panels were 12 feet high and he had 55 to complete, he would still be at it today! The shot was taken in Spring, 2002.

I shot this image of James Brown about 20 years ago in The Point Depot.
I used to do a lot of gigs on my trusty Nikon FM2, using either Kodak Tri-X, or the new kid on the block, Kodak T-Max.
This was shot on T-Max @ 3200 iso, and I just love the grain.

I love the warning sign “Diving at any location within the Forty Foot is dangerous”
What about photography? I was nearly washed away taking some of these images.
The vignetting was caused by the protective bag slipping over the lens, I would normally bin an image when that happens, but I think these were worth keeping.

Day or night?
I shot this image of Killary Harbour 20 years ago on a classic camera, The Hasselblad SWC for The Visitor magazine, I think it was a double page spread and it looked the business.
It was shot into full sun, but interestingly, it looks similar to some previous posts which were Moonlit.

This is Coliemore Harbour in Dalkey, County Dublin.
The island in the distance is Dalkey Island which is a fascinating place with it’s church ruins, Martello tower and gun battery.
I was awarded a Silver IPPA award for this image, in the landscape category.

I just adore this image myself.
It’s a slightly stronger composition without the boat but I love the idea of the collision! The island is in Dalkey, known as The Muglins, the lighthouse is 130years old.
I was awarded a bronze IPPA award for this image, in the landscape category.
